RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
