EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
